Do Australians need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes, generally. If you travel on an ordinary Australian passport, arrange a suitable visa before travelling unless a recognised exemption applies to you. Australian residency alone does not determine the rules: the passport you use matters.

Smartraveller states that Australian passport holders cannot obtain a visa on arrival. Certain travellers may qualify for a visa exemption certificate, including eligible people with a Vietnamese spouse or parent. Check any exemption with Vietnamese authorities.

The Vietnam e-visa option

Vietnam’s electronic visa can cover up to 90 days, with single-entry and multiple-entry options. Your granted dates and entry conditions determine your permission; do not assume every approval gives you a full 90-day stay.

Apply through the Vietnam Immigration Department’s official portal at evisa.gov.vn. Its published government fee is US$25 for single entry or US$50 for multiple entry. These are US-dollar visa fees, separate from your tour quote. Check the amount shown by the official portal before payment.

Single entry or multiple entry?

Think about the whole holiday, including side trips. A route that stays within Vietnam has different entry needs from one that leaves the country and returns.

• Hanoi to Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, without leaving Vietnam: discuss a single-entry visa for your travel dates.
• Vietnam, then Cambodia, then back to Vietnam: check that your visa permits the return entry as well as your first arrival.
• An island-only trip, transit or unusual passport situation: ask Vietnamese immigration or a consulate about the rules for your exact itinerary. Do not assume an exemption covers onward mainland travel.

Check the details before you fly

• Match the application and approval carefully against your passport, including every part of your name and passport details.
• Check the authorised travel dates and that your intended border crossing accepts e-visas.
• Allow time for processing and corrections. Do not treat an application receipt as an approved visa.
• Keep an accessible copy of your approval and consider printing it for check-in.
• On arrival, check the permitted departure date recorded by immigration.
